To Saul, who has been pursuing him non-stop, David still puts himself below him:

And he added, “Why is my Lord pursuing his servant? What have I done, and what wrong am I guilty of?”

1 Samuel 26:18 NIV

In the same way to Achish, who let him live in Philistines land while evading Saul, he also calls himself servant:

Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

1 Samuel 27:5 NIV

For someone who has defeated Goliath, and have been the subject of very flattering songs written by Israelites, David still remains humble. His head didn’t swell and still respected authority and didn’t make big demands of people.

This is a great reminder that no matter what you accomplish in life, stay humble. Stay a servant to others. There are three behaviours we can learn from David:

  1. Respect authority on Earth
  2. Be humble; titles don’t mean anything
  3. Even when presented opportunities to take revenge on people who have wronged you, don’t.

Happy Tuesday!
